Autism is a developmental disorder that can hinder communication and social skills with the onset of symptoms typically beginning in the first three years of life. Children with autism often need intensive therapy, that is challenge for parents in Azerbaijan, where the disorder is not well understood and minimal resources are available.

According to unofficial statistics, approximately 4,000 autistic children have been registered in Azerbaijan. In 2014, Azerbaijan also ranked third in the world for the rise of children with autism.
